Appraisal Skills Training

Client Issue

The Insolvency Service wanted to inject new energy into their existing appraisal training programme in order to maximise delegate engagement and learning.

Requirement

RoleplayUK were mandated to design, script and facilitate an interactive drama-led training solution The key deliverables from the programme were to:

  • reinforce learning of appraisal policy and procedures
  • explore implementation and application of policy when dealing with individuals
  • provide skills practice in a supportive and friendly environment.

Solution

Before scripting the sessions, RoleplayUK undertook a thorough needs analysis visit to familiarise itself with the organisational culture and its associated behaviours. Scripts could then be written to meet the key objectives and reflect the nature of the workplace. A three step solution was proposed:

  •  an initial group session to gain consensus as to what good practice looks and sounds like
  • an interactive scripted role-play ‘interview’, with two actor interviewers playing opposite one actor interviewee. This was facilitated as a ‘Run Stop Start’ session for delegates
  • an improvised interview during which the delegates directed the actor interviewers from the outset.

Impact & Result

Delegate feedback from the event showed that:

  • Over 75% felt comfortable with the new approach to training
  • 80% would attend another drama-led event to meet their training and development needs
  • 100% of delegates felt that they had developed their skill base as a result of the course
  • “I felt that the use of actors made me feel more comfortable to participate.  It also allowed me to test what a persons reaction would be to different scenarios”
  • “Very interactive.  Much better than lots of theory being given via a PowerPoint presentation!”

RoleplayUK was subsequently mandated to provide diversity training for the organisation.
